Become a vineyard Volunteer

A vineyard requires many hours of careful work and maintenance, most of which is done by hand. There is a huge variety of jobs in a vineyard, from picking to pruning. If you decide to get involved you will receive full training and the chance to experience this exciting industry first hand in the fresh air and rolling hills of Hertfordshire.

Time well spent in the great outdoors

At Lokkelebery, we have great fun with various tasks such a shoot selection, all of which are accompanied by great conversation and delicious cake alongside our lovely volunteers. There is certainly something very therapeutic about working with nature, being outside and being on the move.

A word from our volunteers

‘We attended the first session and were not sure what we would be asked to do and wondered why they were trusting people like us with their vines and their dream! However, after receiving very clear instructions we were let loose on the vines and doing “shoot selection”. there were quite a few volunteers and it was nice to meet them and have a chat about how they heard of the vineyard, their background and why they had volunteered. Everyone was very friendly, and the time flew by.

I have been back to help several times and it is great to see how the vines have grown since the first visit. we have been blessed by working in glorious weather. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time visiting and helping at the vineyard and learning more about the steps needed to grow the vines. It has a real feeling of a family business, and we always receive a very warm welcome. A bonus to volunteering are the homemade cakes which are delicious. I would say to anyone who might be tempted to volunteer to go for it, you won’t regret it and will feel better for being in the beautiful countryside, in the company of nice people and seeing the vines growing.

We are looking forward to continue volunteering for the next few years and for when the first bottles are filled and drunk.’

‘I have to say I am having a great time volunteering here. I’ve learnt a lot about vines, shoot removal, tagging up and more. Also meeting so many interesting, nice people. We all work hard and it’s very rewarding. At our coffee breaks, there are yummy homemade cakes on tap! All I can say is, what a rewarding day, being outside. I’ll be back next week!’

Jo

‘Hannah & Liz, I just wanted to let you know that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed volunteering at the vineyard. From that very first volunteering day we have all been made to feel so welcome; it is great to be part of such an exciting and enterprising venture.
It’s been lovely to be part of a friendly team ‘working’ (if you can call it that) in the fields – such a beautiful environment to spend time in and very therapeutic. It’s been good to chat and get to know others as we work our way through the vines.
Oh, and I should mention the quality of refreshments – wonderful homemade cakes with a range of drinks to keep us going – no wine yet but we are all looking forward to sampling your vintage in a few years’ time.
Thanks again for encouraging volunteers from the local community – we all look forward to your success in this venture. I’ll be back supporting you as often as I can.’

‘What a totally out of the norm way to spend a day at the weekend but on a vineyard! The day went quickly, and it was full of fun and laughter as we made our way down the rows of vines selecting the best shoots to help them on their way. Liz and Hannah were on hand to guide us on the initial approach to the task and ensured we did everything safely. We met some lovely local people on the day and were treated to some wonderful homemade cakes – thank you Hannah and Liz! Would I do it all over again? absolutely!’

Claire

‘It has been great fun volunteering at Lokkelebery. We get to spend time in a beautiful environment whilst learning new skills. We have met some interesting, like-minded people and we do enjoyable, varied activities whilst having a good chat. Liz and Hannah are excellent hosts who really appreciate our efforts and provide us with welcome refreshments including delicious cakes!’

Chris & Angela

‘Volunteering weekly at Lokkelebery vineyard has been both exciting and rewarding. Seeing the changes and growth, working outside in the sunshine, and mixing with a lovely group of people. The owner Liz and her daughter Hannah couldn’t be more welcoming, friendly, and appreciative. I am looking forward to working a full year with changing seasons and new skills and eventually tasting the end product 🥂’
